The foundation for Azores Milk – branding and packaging
The Client & Opportunity: Launch a luxury milk from the Azores islands into the discerning Romanian market.
The Core Challenge: How do we communicate the uniqueness of the Azores, in a way that justifies a premium price? How can it stand out on the shelf from other local dairy products?
The Strategic Answer: I built the brand on a paradox: complex origin, simple expression. Every design choice would serve to translate the island’s story. Its volcanic soil, rich pastures, and Atlantic air – into a feeling of serene, unquestionable quality.
Market Research & Strategic Positioning
To launch a luxury import, a deep understanding of the local landscape was essential. I first began with a comprehensive audit of premium dairy products in the Romanian market. Range was both local brands and European imports.
Key Findings:
Visual Tropes: The category was dominated by traditional pastoral imagery (rolling hills, generic cow illustrations).
Opportunity: A significant gap existed for a brand that traded cliché for authentic, refined provenance.
The Strategic Insight:
Instead of adopting local visual codes, the brand’s power would come from showcasing its unique Azorean origin. The goal became to create packaging that felt distinctly foreign, serene, and premium. Thus turning its geographic distance into a visual advantage of purity and exclusivity.
The brand identity
Pillar 1: Brand World
The brand’s visual language is directly inspired by the sensory identity of the Azores. I translated the islands’ dramatic cliffs, lush pastures, and iconic hydrangeas into a cohesive, ownable world.

Color palette:
Each hue is a conscious reference to the archipelago.
Cool Grey & Anthracite: Reflect the basalt stone of the volcanic cliffs and the classic architecture.
Cork & Milk: Evoke the warmth of local craftsmanship and the natural, creamy richness of the product itself.
Indigo: Captures the deep hue of the Atlantic ocean and the ubiquitous hydrangea blooms.

Pillar 2: The Logo & Mark
The logotype uses a clean, customisable sans-serif to establish immediate trust and a modern sensibility. Its simplicity acts as a calm anchor. Ensuring the focus remains on the quality of the product and the richness of the brand story.

Pillar 3: Exploration and sketches
Moving away from generic pastoral sketches, I crafted a minimalist, elegant line-art symbol. Its purpose is to feel like a heraldic seal, a stamp of authentic origin. Premium quality that is instantly recognisable.

Pillar 4: The Packaging System
The packaging system is designed to integrate seamlessly into the life of the discerning consumer. Alongside the standard 1L family size, I introduced a 500ml format.
Strategic Rationale: This smaller size isn’t just about convenience; it’s a market access tool. It lowers the barrier to trial for curious consumers while functioning as a perfect premium hotel or café amenity. Aligning with a luxury mindset by promoting freshness and reducing waste – all while maintaining the serene, premium brand experience.
